We are 51 ESUO delegates / representatives from 32 countries.

Executive Board

At present, 10 ESUO delegates / representatives compose the ESUO executive committee. This comprises the ESUO President and the following nine Executive Board Members who were elected to their positions at the 22nd ESUO General Assembly and elections of December 1st 2025:

  • Cormac McGuinness, President, delegate from Ireland and Trinity College Dublin.

  • Bridget Murphy, Vice President, delegate from Germany and Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

  • Carla Bittencourt, Treasurer, delegate from Belgium and University of Mons.

  • Tom P. Hase, delegate from United Kingdom and University of Warwick.

  • Maria Katsikini, delegate from Greece and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

  • Rainer Lechner, delegate from Austria and Montanuniversität Leoben.

  • Guillaume Morard, delegate from France and CNRS, & Institut de Minéralogie, de Physique des Matériaux et Cosmochimi.
  • Louis Renault, delegate from France and Institute for Integrative Biology of the Cell (I2BC),
    Université Paris-Saclay.
  • Ana Gomes Silva, delegate from Portugal and NOVA-University of Lisbon.

  • Moniek Tromp, delegate from Netherlands and University of Groningen.

Executive Board – next elections in 2029

Executive Board members are elected for a period of four years, and the most recent Executive Board elections took place on 1st December 2025 at the 22nd ESUO General Assembly. At this election the Executive Board was increased by two additional members until the next ordinary election. The next election for the ESUO President will occur in 2027. The next Executive Board election will occur in 2029.

Executive Board – most recent membership

At the 16th ESUO General Assembly of October 19th 2021 and first elections under the new ESUO statutes, the ESUO President that was elected was:

  • Cormac McGuinness, President, delegate from Ireland and Trinity College Dublin.

who as the initial President under the new statutes would serve a six year term.

The elected members of the Executive Board who would serve four year terms were:

  • Bridget Murphy, Vice President, delegate from Germany and Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

  • Carla Bittencourt, Treasurer, delegate from Belgium and University of Mons.

  • Derek Logan, Secretary, delegate from Sweden and University of Lund.

  • Federico Boscherini, delegate from Italy and University of Bologna.

    • Replaced by Wojciech Gawelda, delegate from Spain and “Beatriz Galindo” Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Associated Research Professor at IMDEA Nanoscience (elected to replace Federico Boscherini at the 18th ESUO General Assembly).

  • Tom P. Hase, delegate from United Kingdom and University of Warwick.

  • Rainer Lechner, delegate from Austria and Montanuniversität Leoben.

  • Moniek Tromp, delegate from Netherlands and University of Groningen.

Federico Boscherini (delegate from Italy and University of Bologna) resigned from the board in July 2022 in order to take up the position as chair of the European XFEL board. At the 18th ESUO General Assembly and new Executive Board member was elected (August 29th 2022).

    • Krystyna Jablonska, Poland (was replaced earlier by Ryszard Sobierajski)

while Carla Bittencourt and Derek Logan were re-elected to the new ESUO Executive Board. 

ESUO becoming an AISBL

ESUO became an Association internationale sans but lucratif (AISBL) under Belgian law after an application in July 2021. Our Enterprise number or Numéro d’entreprise is 0771.451.193

ESUO statutes

Amendments to the ESUO statutes were approved at the 22nd General Assembly in 2025 and will shortly be provided here.
